Match Report - May 6, 2006

Final Score: 0-1 (Wilson)

Players: Steven, Chai Liang, Daniel, David, Francis, Hamdan, Tony, Hai Yee, Choong Wei, Wyai Kay, Peter, Charlie, Rudy

The Game: Grabbing my ciggy, I went for my usual release before the start of the game. As I got comfortable in the cubicle, the distant rumbling of thunder sounded and lightning could be heard crashing yonder. The sky had turned a nasty grey by the time I had finished as we took cover from a eminent lightning storm. The heavens promptly opened and washed away any potential for a meaningful competition.

Undaunted, we kickoff at 8am - the rain still pouring. David trod proudly first onto the pitch, anxious to show off his shiny new Nike Air Zoom Total 90 III boots, decked in a glimmering navy blue sheen. Peter and Choong Wei opted to wait out the foul weather. Tony moved up to partner Rudy in strike as Wyai Kay was drafted back to midfield, along with Hamdan, Charlie and Hai Yee. The back four remained unchanged.

Sadly, the pitch was water logged, with sections of the turf dislodged. Play was difficult and passing impeded by the puddles. Soaked, everything seemed heavier today.
The first and only goal came within minutes of the kickoff. A speculative punt into our penalty box caused some confusion which ricocheted off Chai Liang for Wilson to take a shot at goal. Steven, unsighted, was caught and we conceded the goal.

Try as we may, we couldn't break down our opponent's defence enough to garner a clear chance at an equaliser. There were a number of missed opportunities but in the end, the Great Whites' defences held firm and were quicker to gather any loose balls. Their strength at playing the long ball saw them adapting better to the conditions. It also did not help that we had to attack the half of the pitch that had the worse of the puddles.

We played an entire hour without going for an interval. All in all, the weather sucked and in the end, it was disappointing noting that we and the Great Whites had assembled almost full squads for the game. We lost but I guess, in the end, we could attribute it to an inability to cope with the conditions. Well, here's to a better game next week.

Injury: Charlie - bruised shin. And hope no one catches a cold!!
