Match Report - Apr 2, 2006

Score: 7-0 ( Hamdan; Jufri [4]; Edmund; Choong Wei)

Players: Johnny, Chai Liang, Danial, Daniel, Hai Yee, Choong Wei, Peter, Edmund, Jufri, Dave
Guest Player: Morris

The Game: We broke tradition this week: playing at 9 am on Sunday - in a match organised by Peng Siew against his own orange army. Action took place away from St. Wilfrid, this time at Farrer Park, that hallowed ground where so many of our footballing legends had first honed their skills.

A combined team with the Great Whites saw us soundly thrashing the opposition, well and truly stamping our authority from the kickoff. Recruited just before the match, our guest player provided the trump card, adding more bite to an already well balanced albeit shorthanded outfit.

From the touchlines, it soon became obvious that going by the name of Morris, he could name Charlize Theron and Quinton Fortune as among his illustrious countrymen. Ah! a true blue Bafana Bafana. Easily the strongest and most influential player on the field - picture a lesser Patrick Vieira - and you can probably comprehend the effects: an excruciating one sided affair that ended with a 7 goal blitz...enough said.

We went for the interval up 4-0. Even though we took our foot off the pedal in the second half, we still managed to put in 3 more. The floodgates opened with Hamdan beating the goalie with a trademark shot well out from 22 yards. Jufri took his chances well, adding 2 in each half. Edmund contributed 1 in the first and Choong Wei completed the rout with a fine solo effort.

The opponents, outplayed, fluffed what limited chances they had upfront. And Johnny was up to the challenge whenever called upon - his best save coming after the interval - tipping over a long range effort that was evidently dipping into goal.

Well, so far, it seems that the sum of the SDs and Great Whites have been greater than its parts, making it 3 wins out of 3 of our combined efforts. The foreign import did make it a whole lot comfortable but it wouldn't be too far off to say that we could have won it on our own. So, greater opponents await on the sidelines?

Injuries: Peter limped off with a strained knee

Chai Liang (No. 3) said...

The field about 30% smaller than our usual St Wilfrid. Grass longer making it easier to kick high balls. But it was dry and bumpy. I think my ankle a bit strained today because of that.

A few words from Edmond: "Your team defence always play 4 in a row, should try to play with one last man. Perhaps we should have some games with mixed players (Yellow and White)."

The pink tumbler left behind was Hamdan's ...anyone took it back?
