Final Score: 0-3 (Who cares!)
Players: Alvin, Chai Liang, David, Francis, Hai Yee, Wyai Kay, Peter, Eric, Johnny, Steven, Guest Player 1 & 2, Danial
The Game: What turned out to be McClaren's folly could turn out to be our lucky number: 3-5-2, as Tony decided we needed to pack the midfield to foil the Great Whites superiority in that area. The game plan worked as the Great Whites had limited opportunities to strike from the 12 yard box. Unfortunately, we still leaked in 3 goals. The experiment however, sacrificed any penetrative effect as we managed only sporadic attacks: our total tally for corners was 1.
Well if England lost 2-0 and we lost 3-0, than it seems we are only as bad as the formation. However, Johnny didn't make a ballyhoo of Robinson's magnitude although their attack did falter miserably. It is worthy to note that Argentina did win the 1986 World with this formation...so it's not too bad but of course, if you had Maradona on your side...
So this writer is proposing that in the coming weeks, we should try to revive the Italian's catenaccio system: 1-4-3-2. With four defenders playing in front of the sweeper, they will first nullify any long range attempts and then act as a funnel that will force attackers down the middle where the sweeper would clean up. This should frustrate the opponents to push forward more and we will then play the classic counter-attack - we need someone to pump the long balls though. We should be able to win with the classic Italian scoreline of 1-0. All we need is a Maldini and a Rossi and victory will be ours!!!
Injury: None on our side.
